When your autoimmune disease hits, it feels like it washed away the ground under your feet. You don’t know what happened, it was going so well. The outside world doesn’t always notice and thinks you still look pretty good. Given your complaints, that’s a mystery to you too. While all those invisible symptoms quickly start to take their toll, you get ready and pull yourself together. Ready to face another battle!

DO YOU RECOGNIZE THIS?

All that medication, for a while now it no longer feels like the (only) correct way to ‘work’ on your disease. It even gives side effects and there’s always that tension again whether it will start working and/or continue to work. You have often looked at alternatives, such as nutrition. Even tried something out, but that didn’t work completely because you just don’t really know what to do or how to start. Google also tells a lot of different things and your doctor can’t help you with this. It just makes you despondent.

Like a zombie you push yourself through the morning after another broken night. You are desperately trying to figure out what could have made your symptoms worse. With a blurry head due to lack of sleep you can hardly remember everything you ate yesterday. Frustration is starting to build up and the words “it will be fine” is the last thing you want to hear.

You wonder how you’ll get through the weekend away that you’ve planned. You were looking forward to it so much, but now you have so little energy, you are just dragging your feet. You won’t cancel the trip. Maybe you would for a broken leg, but certainly not because of your illness. You will make the most of it. You wonder whether you will actually enjoy the sea view or whether you will be mostly on the lookout for a toilet.

Once again you have to cancel an appointment. Sometimes others give you the feeling as if you’re to blame. It can be difficult for others to understand, because nobody can see what’s going on in your body. The lack of understanding and the helplessness you feel irritates you immensely. But you are most annoyed that you can’t look further ahead than tomorrow or sometimes the same afternoon, and therefore not able to plan anything ahead with your friends.

You already get nervous having the thought that you have to sit in the car for an hour. What if your intestines will lose it? You’ve prepared the bag with extra clothing, and toilet paper rolls are a standard item in your car. You won’t let your illness get you down, so you bite the bullet, but you’d rather just stay at home.

How Do You continue?

If it continues like this, it’ll keep getting harder. Because the courage and fighting mentality which currently still pushes you through getaways and appointments is slowly decreasing. While your illness intensifies its grip on your work and social life, you are slowly able to do less and less. You also start to notice that the frequency of your symptoms increase, and every time they return it seems to take longer before you can pick yourself up again.
